April Message: Restoring Sacred Vision: Seeing the World Through Fresh Eyes

GATHERING MESSAGE

The forest at Rock River Heritage Park was sunlit and alive with birdsong this morning as our community gathered to practice one of the most quietly radical things available to us: the practice of truly seeing.

Not glancing. Not labeling. Not filing the world away under "already known." But actually looking with wonder, or through the lens of the heart, as the mystical traditions teach us - rather than through the familiar and often exhausting lens of the egoic mind.

Opening in Circle

We opened with an original poem from Danielle, a beautiful invitation to remember that we ARE nature from Sarah, and a reading from Wild Rhythms, a book spoken through the voice of Mother Earth by Kat Villain. Each of these offered in circle under the bows of the beautiful pine trees. Then we settled into a guided meditation that moved us through breath, sound, and touch. By the time we opened our eyes, the forest was already a different place.

The Three Gates of Restoring Sacred Vision

From there, we introduced the Three Gates of Restoring Sacred Vision — each gate an opening of the heart, a doorway out of habit and into genuine encounter:

  • Gate 1 — The Gate of Silence: "I release the narration." To see clearly, the inner commentary must pause. When we narrate life, we stop experiencing it.

  • Gate 2 — The Gate of Wonder: "I have never seen this before." The intentional choice to look at something with a sense of wonder, instead of what we already think we know.

  • Gate 3 — The Gate of Interconnection: "This holds a whole world." Nothing exists in isolation. In a forest, this gate opens almost by itself.

We drew briefly on the four mystical traditions that arrived at this same teaching from completely different directions: Zen Buddhism (Beginner's Mind), Sufism (polishing the mirror of the heart), Kabbalah (the holy spark hidden within every shell), and Christian mysticism ("Above all else I want to see things differently" A Course in Miracles). Four paths. One invitation.

The Silent Solo Wander

We then wandered out into the landscape with one simple instruction: walk slowly, until something catches your eye, and then stop completely. Find one thing and practice seeing it with fresh eyes using the 3 Gates practice.

Hold what you notice. You will be sharing it with a partner when you return.

The forest trail and the river welcomed us. And what came back from the wander was extraordinary.

The Partner Gaze and Listening Practice

When the community returned, we paired up for a practice that brought the Three Gates from the natural world into human relationship. Partners sat facing each other. One person shared what the morning had shown them, and the other listened while practicing the Three Gates: not preparing a response, not affirming or nodding, but simply witnessing. Receiving. Letting their partner arrive the way they had let the forest arrive.

Then they switched.

The quality of presence in those paired circles was something to behold. Sacred vision, practiced with a human face, becomes a form of love.

What the Forest Taught Us

When we came back into the closing circle, what our community shared took our breath away.

Someone practiced the Three Gates with a patch of mud, and she saw beauty, light, and a whole new world hiding in plain sight.

Someone saw themselves differently through the mirror of nature, recognizing something in themselves they had never been able to see before.

Someone noticed the invasive species growing along the trail and arrived at this: they don't know they are invasive. They are simply thriving — reaching toward the light, taking up space, belonging to themselves.

And Sarah named what may be the most profound truth of the morning: just as our deepest human longing is to be truly seen, heard, and known, so is nature's. Nature wants this relationship with us. And we are not separate from nature. We are nature, remembering itself.

We closed with the blessing that has carried this whole teaching from the beginning:

"May you walk into the rest of your day not as an expert on the world , but as a guest in a gallery of miracles."

SPIRITUAL INVITATION FOR APRIL

The 3 GATES OF Restoring Sacred Vision: gaze upon something new for a few minutes a day using this practice. Notice what you’ve stopped seeing. Notice once again what has always been there.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION

We began with the observation that most of our lives are spent looking at things through our mental filters rather than truly seeing them.

  • The Reflection: What in your daily life have you stopped seeing, a person, a place, a living thing, because you have decided you already know what it is?

  • The Invitation: Choose one person to approach with fresh eyes this week, and journal about what unfolds.

We explored the teaching that our knowledge of a thing - its name, its function, its history - can act as a barrier to experiencing its living essence.

  • The Reflection: What label or category have you placed on a current situation that might be closing you off from experiencing it freshly?

Four traditions arrived at the same teaching: empty your cup, polish the mirror, look through the shell for the spark, and above all else, be willing to see things differently.

  • The Reflection: Which of the four traditions most surprised or moved you? What does that tell you about where your own inner work is calling you?

Sacred vision is a living practice. It requires the courage to be uncertain and the humility to be corrected by what is.

  • The Reflection: What is one thing you would like to see "above all else" differently, and what is one small step you can take this week toward that new seeing?

NEXT GATHERING:

  • Sunday, May 10th: Honoring The Original Mother

Today we hold all the forms of mothering in our hearts. And beneath all of it, we feel the presence of the one mother who holds every mother. The earth. The Original One. She who does not withhold, does not exhaust, does not require us to earn her care. She simply holds. She has always simply held.
