GATHERING MESSAGE

This month, we are turning our attention outward, to match the unbridled and wild energy and abundance of the summer season. In our gathering on Sunday, we explored what it means to return to each other, and we practiced letting ourselves be seen by the people around us, while witnessing them in return.

We opened by naming a truth many of us carry quietly: somewhere along the way, most of us built a wall around our hearts. Not because we wanted to keep ourselves away from others, but because sometimes it feels safer to keep parts of ourselves hidden. If we aren't seen, we can't be judged. But that same wall, the one meant to protect us, is also the thing standing between us and the connection we're aching for. Returning to each other asks something different of us: to risk being seen as we are, unpolished and unfinished, and to hold space for the people beside us to do the same, without trying to mold them into who we think they should be.

Our guide for the morning, Erin Helmuth, led us through an embodied Trinity practice, connecting with heartbeat, breath, and the quiet flow of life moving through the body, before inviting the group into a standing circle.

Then she led us in a shared experience named the Web of Light. It began with a simple ball of sparkly yarn. Holding the ball of yarn, each person revealed what was on their heart, and then tossed the yarn to the next person, until the room was held inside a visible web of connection, built one honest voice at a time. We were reminded that the thread did not create the connection between us. It revealed the connection that was already there.

From there, we explored how nearly every wisdom tradition arrives at the same discovery. Rumi's passionate poetry sets fire to our hearts, reminding us of the love we already are and the connection we already share. In the Hindu and yogic traditions, the greeting Namaste names this directly, the divine in me recognizing the divine in you. And our Indigenous Elders offer us a window into what it looks like when we choose to walk together.

SPIRITUAL PRACTICE

To carry this teaching from the mind into an embodied practice, we closed with a Metta, or Loving-Kindness, meditation, a heart-centered practice rooted in the Buddhist tradition. We practiced offering the silent phrase I see the love in you first to ourselves, then to someone close to us, and finally to everyone gathered in the room, letting the feeling flow rather than forcing it. We closed by returning once more to the wall so many of us carry, noticing whether it felt even slightly softer than it had that morning, not gone, but loosened, one honest moment at a time.

Revisit and listen to this guided practice in the gathering recording at the time 43:00.

SPIRITUAL INVITATION FOR JULY

Once a day this month, choose one person, a stranger, a loved one, even someone that you are having a challenge with. Before you speak or react to them, pause for one breath and silently offer the phrase: I see the love in you. Not their mood, not their behavior, but what's underneath all of it. You don't have to feel it instantly. You're simply training your eyes to keep reaching past the surface, one gaze, one recognition at a time, to see who they really are.

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION

On the Wall: Where do you notice yourself protecting your heart, and what would it feel like to lower that wall even slightly?

On Being Seen: Reflect on the last time you let yourself be fully seen by another person, unpolished and unfinished.

On Seeing Others: Is there someone in your life you've quietly been trying to change rather than simply receiving them as they are?

On Belonging: Brené Brown writes that true belonging doesn't require you to change who you are, it requires you to be who you are. Where in your life do you feel that kind of belonging most fully?
